Thoughts On the Stimulus Hoax

It is unconscionable that this massive spending bill has been passed by the Democrats in the United States Congress and not one of these sterling legislators had an opportunity to read the final draft. As the details become clear, the fact that this bill has little to do with economic stimulus and everything to do with increasing government control over more and more of our private lives will become obvious.

There will be a massive attempt by both the Democrats and their media sycophants to mask the consequences of this behemoth "government takeover bill" but the truth of the details will emerge. As they do, the outrage of rational people will explode.

With every revelation, the names of the members of the Democratic Party that enabled this assault on our liberties and our economic structure must be prominently displayed.  As we approach 2010, no one should be allowed to forget:  The few, who were responsible for so much ruin, with so little regard for the consequences.

Presidents Back in the Day

The song, “Abraham, Martin and John,” written by Richard Holler in 1968, was a salute to the legacy of three men who left an ever-lasting impression and vision for this nation. They were Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King and John F Kennedy. Though many today scour the archives of history to bring us the not so elegant moments of these fine men, their achievements and their contributions will remain untarnished.

These qualities stand in stark contrast to the absence of such courage, conviction and most noticeably leadership, from those who now have the responsibility for our nation’s future.

Abraham Lincoln said, “That government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”  Martin Luther King had a dream that his children “will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” John F Kennedy famously stated, “Ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country.”

Today, the people part of government has all but perished. Our children are not judged period; there are no rewards for achievement and no penalties for failure. In addition, it would seem that our country is determined to do unto us regardless and asks not what we think about it. Simply stated, the new mantra of government is “perish the thought of any personal dreams lest the questions you ask upset what we want to do to your country.”

The founders of this great nation recognized that we are endowed by our creator with certain unalienable rights, the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. In their wisdom, the warned of the corruption of the lust for power. That warning has become near reality, as many now talk in terms of the “rule of government,” not in terms of the governed.

For years by the score and then many more, great men have addressed this nation and inspired the people with their words of vision and purpose. Now many years hence, politicians with calculated rhetoric designed to fool not inspire have taken their place. Our Democratic Republic is rapidly giving way to socialism and our government, once of, by, and for the people, now perceives us as wards of the state. The successful campaign to factionalize the American people, demographically and culturally, has turned the first word of the preamble to our constitution from “we” to “I.”

The history of America is rich in its heritage of addressing injustice and ending the policies that indentured many into bondage by others. From the practice of slavery to the exploitation of workers by industry, we have pushed back the hands of oppression. There would appear to be a new form of subservience however, one that expects fealty to the power of government and the expectation that more and more of the fruits of our labor are its property. It is a subservience that will only grow in magnitude if there is no will or voice to oppose it.

In this light, it is the greatest of ironies that at the time we commemorate Abraham Lincoln’s 200th birthday, America’s first “Black” president wishes to sign legislation into law for a massive expansion of government.  By so doing, he will essentially turn the people of this free nation into subordinates, with a slavish dependence on his “Master Plan.”

Indeed, at this time when we honor the memory and achievements of the great presidents of our past, it is appropriate to ask the question: “Has anybody seen our old friend Abraham?” Can you tell us where the inspiring vision he, and those like him, had for America, has gone?

Someone’s Knocking at the Door

Observing the actions or rather the reactions of Barack Obama to the critics of “his” stimulus bill offers insight and opportunity for Republicans. Our new president it would seem has emotional difficulty in confrontational situations.  He has frequently become upset, testy and even visibly angry when pressed on an issue. These are not characteristics indicative of a strong and confident leader and certainly not acceptable characteristics in the man who now leads this nation.

The concern for Barack Obama’s near total lack of experience to be the President of the United States was pooh-poohed early in the Democratic Primaries. After all, we were told, Obama had once been a community organizer and served as a State Senator for the State of Illinois. Besides, who could challenge a stellar record of voting present 129 times during his time in that office. As for the fact that he had absolutely no experience at the executive level, well, he did such a great job of running his campaign.

In his brief three weeks in office however, Barack Obama has succeeded in dusting the glitter from the eyes of many who rushed to be humble servers of harmonious platitudes for his inaugural honeymoon.  Those of us who did not run to join the enamored throngs fawning over the new president, did not have long to wait to have our caution justified. Our “Uniter in Chief” has even managed to evoke outrage from European communities because of the Smoot-Hawleyesque trade protectionism provisions in his stimulus bill.

From using U.S taxpayer’s dollars to fund abortion in the international community, to what has become an embarrassing joke in his cabinet choices, Obama’s early critics have been vindicated. The joke however, is not on the president; it is on those who put so much faith in a man that has raced out of the box with his shoe laces tied together.

President Obama’s naiveté has been on full display, as he has chosen to champion an omnibus spending bill in the name of economic stimulus. The president completely fumbled the incredible opportunity inadvertently handed to him by former President Bush, an opportunity he now refers to as a mess tied up in a bow and dropped in his lap by the outgoing Bush Administration.

Instead of seizing the moment and actually developing plans and strategies that would have had an immediate and positive effect on the economy, he chose to go for the liberal brass ring and replace our system of economics with socialism. Moreover, he refuses to recognize that a majority of the people do not support his bill, a bill exposed as having little to do with stimulus and everything to do with pet projects and political payoffs.

By hotly defending the indefensible, Barack Obama chooses to violate the first rule of holes. Specifically, when you find yourself in one, stop digging. With just three weeks in office, Barack Obama has already presented the GOP with everything they need to make significant electoral gains in 2010 and to be in a strong position to win back the White House in 2012.

To accomplish this, Republicans must do three things:

(1) Develop and “aggressively” market solid alternatives to all Democrat initiatives, especially as they pertain to national security, personal freedoms and the economy. (2) Effectively use the fact that for now, Barack Obama is in over his head with respect to the level at which he is expected to perform in the office he holds, and, (3) exploit Obama’s inability to deal effectively with confrontation.

Obama expects to get his way and his true character is revealed when he is openly challenged. The GOP would do well to make him earn his every political victory the hard way.

For eight years, the Democrats played a very nasty game of political hardball to demean and humiliate George W Bush. Republicans should not reduce themselves to the same gutter tactics but it is always appropriate to use your opponent’s weaknesses to your advantage. Opportunity is knocking at the door GOP, do us a favor and let him in.

Strategy and Tactics (Repost)

The GOP We Want to See

Many, in both political camps, have decided that they are all-powerful and have the answer for what Republicans must do to again become a viable party. It would be a fairly safe bet to put little to no stock in the declarations coming from the opposition. Advice from those who profess Republican bone fides and yet echo the advice from those who aspire to permanently banish us to minority status is equally ill advised.

The key to a Republican resurgence will not be in the form of a campaign slogan, rhetorical message or demographic pandering; it will require strategy and tactics.

For starters, Republicans must end the intimidation factor of the mainstream press. The media is for the most part an organization with a serious liberal bias. Republicans need to understand that no amount of pandering will result in favorable media coverage. Since the media have now adopted both a partisan and a political agenda however, Republicans “must” subject these agents of propaganda to the same vetting process and public scrutiny as the media does the candidates. The media must not be allowed to operate as a political party incognito.

Moreover, the Republican message has no punch. It is delivered in a fog of non-committal rhetoric couched in words without conviction. Call it the Miranda approach, they want to be sure that nothing they say can and will be used against them. It may be a politically safe approach but it hardly instills confidence and does even less for respect in the American voter. For all the reasons that have caused Republicans to suffer at the polls, this spineless, conciliatory, back peddling sits at the top of the list.

In addition, linking Democrats to notorious figures is a non-starter. The left celebrates unsavory and radical behavior. Domestic terrorist, William Ayers, is now enjoying celebrity status as a result of being used in this manner in the last election. What is required is an airtight argument as to the dangers, consequences and deterioration we suffer as a nation as a result of this despicable behavior. Only then, can the Democrats’ frequent associations with these individuals be linked with those of such disgusting character and reputation.

Perhaps the most effective strategy the Dems have developed is the ability to take even the most direct and damaging charges or criticism from the right and turn them into a point of ridicule against them. It is effectively accomplished by issuing a blanket rejection of the charges and a militaristic discipline among Democrats to echo these talking points verbatim. Republicans must develop a serious “anti-talking-point” strategy.

A perfect example of this is the results of a November 18 survey conducted by Zogby International. Of the 512 Obama voters who were given questions in the multiple-choice survey, only 2% were able to correctly answer all of the questions about Barack Obama and only about 50% could correctly answer half or more. However, over 80% of these same people were able to correctly answer negative questions about John McCain and Sarah Palin.

In short, the Dems have been extremely successful in silencing criticism from their opposition while clearly articulating their own attack against them.  Attacks high in vitriol and slander and seriously absent facts and truth. It is time for the Republican Party to join the information age and develop a network system that can dwarf the formidable juggernaut created by the Democratic Party. It must be broad in scope and intimately aligned with both the conservative and Republican Blogosphere. If it is to have any chance for success however, it must be driven by the grass roots and not mired in beltway groupthink.

Lastly, one of the greatest opportunities for Republicans is to “re-educate” the American people in the principles of freedom and democracy. One of the most disturbing perceptions expressed by many of those who supported Barack Obama is nested in statements as to “how he will rule.” This is America, we don’t have “rulers,” we are a nation “governed” by those we elect to represent us. What greater opportunity is there, than to remind the people that they are a free and democratic society, not subjects.

The Republican Party can regain the position of leadership: if, they demonstrate the dangers of the current entitlement mentality; clearly articulate that our rights come from god not government; dispel the growing perception of “rule by the government;” awaken the ability in the people to think for themselves; put names to those responsible for our failures and most importantly, “dare to lead.”

Clueless?

An article in the Wall Street Journal by James Taranto, “Pliability Journalism,” reaffirmed the fact that the media can shape the news to reflect whatever perception they want the reader to presume. The point here is that if the media is intent on pushing biased perspective, and not factual accounts of the events that serve as the information we use to make some of our most critical decisions, what do we really know?

When you extend that question to the massive layers of bureaucratic disinformation that equally obfuscate reality, the answer becomes positively frightening.

For the last seven plus years, a major segment of the media from which a majority of Americans receives their news, employed a relentless campaign to destroy an American president. Now, they hail the very footsteps of our new president and declare his every decision as reasoned, bipartisan, measured and in our nation’s best interest. While reality challenges their every word, the media persists in its announcement that all is now right in the world.

The body that was created to serve as the legislative branch of our nation’s government is currently displaying its public face of extreme concern and purpose. It does so while it plots how it can con the American public into accepting a near government takeover of the private sector. As the real economy stumbles and real people watch what was once a comfortable retirement cushion evaporate, our wonders in Washington casually talk in terms of trillions of future debt. This, as a media reports the virtues of financial enslavement, conveniently avoiding all facts and evidence to the contrary.

What is staggering is the degree to which this intentional propaganda program has been successful. For example, the left was immediate in its mantra that “Bush lied,” when we did not discover active stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons in Iraq. The media took the baton and ran with the “notion” for weeks until a slogan became fact. The fact that everyone, to include all those who were so vociferous in their denunciation of “Bush’s lie” had testified on the record to exactly the same thing, was completely dismissed. Once again, the media’s version of the story trumped reality.

The defense used to justify this deliberate disinformation is freedom of the press and freedom of speech. These are certainly the fundamentals of liberty but it does not extend to the freedom to deceive. When political and ideological agenda become the substitutes for facts and objectivity, the synonym for journalist becomes propagandist. When practiced with deliberate intention, it becomes malice. Many of our leading journalists today practice their craft with malice a forethought.

While there is no rule that dictates that those in the media must not be political advocates, there should be a rule that mandates that should such be the case, they disclose that advocacy. It is not a rule however, and many media elites play hardball politics under the guise of “the people’s right to know. In the media’s case however, it is more likely “only that they want us to know.”

The end result is that the public at large has absolutely no way of getting at the truth. Politicians will always engage in rhetorical ether to try to persuade their constituents. It would fall then to an objective medium to parse these glowing platitudes and temper their utopian promises with more than a modicum of reality and fact. Instead, we have a large segment of our nation’s leading print and broadcast media performing the function of the mass marketing of political propaganda.

The synergistic melding of liberal politicians with an ideological and politically motivated media has resulted in a vacuum of knowledge. The pushers of this political pablum fully understand the impact of their persuasion. As for the rest of us, well, either we develop the ability to read between the lines or forever resign ourselves to the ranks of the malleable and clueless.
